A Watershed Approach

About the NRWC

WHO WE ARE

The Narraguagus River Watershed Council (NRWC) was established as a grassroots volunteer organization in 1997 under Governor Angus King's Atlantic Salmon Conservation Plan as a group of local watershed stakeholders working within their communities to foster stewardship of the watershed and help restore its distinct population of wild Atlantic salmon.
"Seeking Common Ground"
The mission of the NRWC is to protect, conserve, and enhance the waters of the Narraguagus River system and the land within its watershed boundaries.
NRWC members and volunteers are your friends and neighbors-who live, work and recreate in the watershed. Members include civic groups, government agencies, local businesses, environmental groups, recreational boaters, fisherman, hunters, recreational boaters, bird watchers, and students. Together we work to protect and restore Atlantic salmon spawning and rearing habitat throughout the watershed. We also strive to ensure that our watershed stays healthy so that our children can swim, fish, hike, hunt, and recreate in these same lands and waters that we enjoy today.
WHAT WE DO
The Narraguagus River Watershed Council (NRWC) promotes watershed stewardship through responsible resource utilization. NRWC volunteers identify restore several erosion sites each year in cooperation with landowners, plant trees along streambanks to help maintain the cooler water temperatures required by Atlantic salmon and brook trout and maintaining riparian buffer zones for other wildife.
Our volunteer programs also include the Narraguagus Stream Team(/b., which monitors water quality by collecting and analyzing water samples in collaboration with the Maine Departments of Environmental Protection and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. In addition, the NRWC organizes several community events each year, including river clean-up, canoe trip, hikes, and more.
NRWC's monthly business meetings are open to the public and all are invited to attend. Please call our office at (207) 546-3313 for meeting times and locations, or send an e-mail inquiry to the link below.
