About the Pleasant River Watershed Council

Who Are We?

The Pleasant River Watershed Council (PRWC) was established in 1997 as a grassroots volunteer organization under Governor Angus King's Atlantic Salmon Conservation Plan. Through the PRWC, local watershed stakeholders work together to foster watershed stewardship and to help restore its distinct population of wild Atlantic salmon. Our mission is to conserve and enhance the natural features, water quality, fishery, and critical watershed of the Pleasant River while promoting responsible utilization of the resource.
PRWC members and volunteers are your friends and neighbors-who live, work and recreate in the watershed. Our members include civic groups, government agencies, local businesses, environmental groups, fisherman, hunters, recreational boaters, bird watchers, and students. Together we work to protect and restore Atlantic salmon spawning and rearing habitat throughout the watershed. We also strive to ensure that our watershed stays healthy so that our children can swim, fish, hike, hunt, and recreate in these same lands and waters that we enjoy today.
WHAT WE DO
The Pleasant River Watershed Council promotes watershed stewardship through responsible resource utilization. PRWC volunteers identify and restore several erosion sites each year in cooperation with landowners, plant trees along stream banks to help maintain the cooler water temperatures required by Atlantic salmon and brook trout and maintaining riparian buffer zones for other wildlife. Our volunteer programs also include the Stream Team, which monitors water quality by collecting and analyzing water samples in collaboration with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission, NOAA Fisheries, Downeast Salmon Federation, and U.S. Geological Survey. In addition, the Council organizes several community events each year, including a river clean-up, canoe trips, hikes, workshops and more!
