An excavator places large boulders to form a cluster in the river channel.

It’s exciting to see the nature-like fishway really beginning to take shape in the Narraguagus River!

This week, crews continued building the series of step pools that will help Atlantic salmon and other sea-run fish move through this stretch of river. Large boulders are also being carefully placed throughout the channel to create a more natural, varied river environment—and give fish different pathways to navigate as they move upstream and downstream.

Two excavators work on placement of large boulders in the step pool portion of the nature-like fishway.

Another big milestone this week: the piles that will support the new ice piers are officially in place! Next week, the crane will come down and crews will begin constructing the concrete foundations for the ice piers, which will sit below the water’s surface.
Sargent Corporation will also keep building out the fishway’s pools and boulder clusters and begin work on the upstream structure that will help maintain the existing headpond elevation. They will also continue work throughout the weekend so please continue to steer clear of the project area.
