By Ellie Mason, Habitat Restoration Project Manager
This week, a major milestone was reached as water began flowing through the temporary bypass channel. While construction is underway, this channel allows fish to continue migrating through the Narraguagus River while crews work to replace the aging Ice Control Dam with a nature-like fishway.
Crews also completed a temporary rock cofferdam to safely redirect the river around the construction area, allowing work to begin on removing the existing ice piers and portions of the old dam next week. Throughout construction, staff from the Maine Department of Marine Resources will continue to be on site as needed to safely relocate any fish that become isolated.
Thank you to everyone for respecting the road closure signs while work is underway. Your patience and support are helping make this restoration project possible.
