Downeast Salmon Federation Prepares for Leadership Transition After Decades of Service
Columbia Falls, Maine — May 11, 2026 — The Board of Directors of the Downeast Salmon Federation (DSF) and Executive Director Dwayne Shaw have jointly announced a planned, one-year leadership transition, with the goal of welcoming a new Executive Director in April 2027. The Board will launch a formal search process this fall.
For more than three decades, Shaw has guided DSF with steady leadership, helping shape the organization into an internationally recognized leader in Atlantic salmon conservation and river restoration. His tenure includes landmark conservation achievements, most notably the 2000 removal of the East Machias River dam, which earned the National Coastal America Partnership Award from President George W. Bush. That site is now home to DSF’s Peter Gray Hatchery, advancing Atlantic salmon restoration. In 2016, Shaw was also named one of three recipients of the Gulf of Maine Visionary Award in recognition of his leadership in protecting and restoring the region’s ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
“Serving Downeast Salmon Federation has been the honor of my life,” said Shaw. “I am incredibly proud of what we have built together with our staff, partners, and supporters, and the impact we have had on restoring our rivers and sea-run fish. This transition has been thoughtfully planned to ensure DSF is well positioned for the future. I look forward to continuing this work over the next year and then spending more time enjoying the Downeast landscape and outdoor life.”
DSF Board President Michael Look emphasized both the importance of Shaw’s leadership and the organization’s focus on what lies ahead. “Dwayne’s vision and commitment have been foundational to DSF’s success,” said Look. “We look forward to a strong year ahead as we celebrate his accomplishments and identify the right person to lead the organization into its next chapter.”
The Board has developed a comprehensive Executive Transition Plan to ensure continuity and stability during a period of strong organizational growth and expanding impact. Over the coming year, DSF looks forward to celebrating Shaw’s remarkable tenure and the lasting influence of his leadership.
