MacHatton Brook Preserve
Description and Access
The 284-acre MacHatton Brook Preserve consists of forest and wetlands including 2 miles along the Narraguagus River in Cherryfield, Maine. Visitors will see the preserve sign, a few parking spots, and a short (0.5 mile) trail leading to the Narraguagus River.
There is also a secondary access via Sharon Lane, which has no preserve sign, but does offer a slightly longer trail leading to a primitive riverside campsite. This campsite offers canoe access, and features a picnic table and fire ring. There are no facilities at this property, and visitors should follow the “Pack-It-In, Pack-It-Out” policy while visiting this preserve.
Road access to the preserve is by driving to Deblois, Maine on Route 193 and turning onto Lane Road at the Deblois town office and fire station. Proceed on Lane Road for 1.2 miles and following Lane Road as it turns left and becomes a dirt road leading into the blueberry barrens. Follow the main road south for about 6.3 miles through the barrens and continue as it leads you into the forest, past Sharon Lane and onward to Salmon Run Lane. Turn left on Salmon Run Lane and continue for 1 mile, bear left and proceed another 0.5 mile and there will be a turnaround loop at the end of the road with a DSF preserve sign near the trailhead.
History and Background
The MacHatton Brook Preserve wouldn’t be here for the public without the generosity of the former owners, and the invaluable help of Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT). The preserve was purchased by DSF during a campaign to protect 35 miles of river in Washington and Hancock Counties.
