The West Branch of the Narraguagus River
To reach the primary parking area and access for this preserve, travel north approximately 3 miles from Route 182 (also known as Black’s Woods Road) in Cherryfield, Maine. The DSF preserve sign will be on your left with a small parking area that can accommodate several vehicles. There is an information kiosk at this site, and it is the trailhead for both the Western River Tote Trail and the Gowan Wilson Loop Trail which begins on the opposite side of Spragues Falls Road. There is an old family cemetery along the loop trail, and the Western River Tote Trail leads off to the west and leads to the Peace and Love trail which offers a bit of a climb for those looking for a spectacular view. Visitors may also launch a canoe or kayak by following Spragues Falls Road to the very end and portaging to the river.

For users of the Boar’s Nest Camp and Spragues Falls, this is also the preferred access point. Please be respectful and don’t block traffic by pulling your vehicle completely off of the road. There are no amenities or facilities at this location, and visitors should follow the “Pack-it-in, Pack-it-out” policy when visiting this preserve.
