The Wigwams Camp
Vehicle access from US Route 1 in Columbia Falls, Maine is by turning north on Tibbettstown Road and driving 6.5 miles until you reach a cemetery at the corner of Montegail Road. Take a right on Montegail Road and stay on the paved road for 3 miles, where you will see a “Passamaquoddy Blueberry Land” sign (Montegail Road will continue to the left here). Turn onto the gravel road through the blueberry barrens for 2 miles. When presented with choices of left or right or straight – always stay straight. At the “Y” intersection bear to the left and continue for another 1.5 miles. The forest should be on your right and the blueberry fields to the left on this section of road. Just before the road becomes wooded on both sides, there is a small granite post on the right and there is a clear parking spot on the left. If your vehicle lacks higher clearance, please park here. Otherwise, continue approximately 0.3 mile to the Wigwams Camp. Out of respect for others, please do not block the access road.
The camp can also be reached by canoe by pulling out before the rapids and portaging down the access road which parallels the river.
History and Background
Archaeological evidence and oral history indicates Passamaquoddy tribal use of this important part of the Machias River. This 1960’s era fishing camp has been a very popular Downeast destination, and the camp was a popular destination with the famous radio and television personality, Arthur Godfrey (1903-1983). DSF is proud to be able to offer use of this amazing and historically important camp to the public.
